Nipping At The Bitterest Heels

Well, I related on my podcast about posting negative feedback about another podcast, then hearing the guy moan about it, and deleting the feedback, then getting irratated again, and posting more negative feedback, which was even worse. But accurate and well-deserved.

Now I just heard the guy ranting about my latest feedback, and the fact that I was not completely explicit in describing the profanity used in the show. Maybe completely explicit is redundant, but I left no doubt as to the offensive remark. But the comments stay, and as there was more profanity I’m going to see about getting iTunes to label the show as ‘Explicit.’

No class, Dan.

Good News! For Yesterday’s News, That Is!

I've figured out a great way to do Yesterday's News. Easier for me, and better for "the readers." I use del.icio.us to tag any interesting story with the tag "yesterdays.news". I can then link to del.icio.us using this tag and see all the stories in reverse-chronological order, and anyone who visits that url will see stories as soon as I add them. I can also add my own one-liners and change the titles of the articles to make them more descriptive. I can also do the same with "You Have To See It!" sites.

No News

Literally, I've decided to quit doing the Yesterday's News podcast. It's too much work for a mediocre podcast, so now I'm just going to collect the noteworty news stories and link to them as needed.

More on Google Calendar

I like the QuickAddd feature which I've already used several time. You can click on QuickAdd and then type something like "Easter Service" tomorrow at 8:30am, and it makes the appointment "Easter Service" at the appropriate place on the calendar. I haven't tried "Lunch with Kevin every Thursday at 12:15 until May" yet, but I'm not optomistic….Ok, I tried it and it didn't work. But still, QuickAdd is a handy feature.

Libsyn Woes

Ok, Libsyn is great 95% of the time. The price is right, and the online tools are pretty good. Support is ok, and it's my understanding that right now it's just 5 part-timers running it, or maybe that's 5 guys working full-time in addition to their day jobs, plus 1 hired flunky.

And yet there do seem to be occasionaly glitches. Like the stats pages were down for a few days. They were working this morning, and gratifyingly, there seemed to have already been 25 downloads of my latest podcast episode from a couple of days ago.

But I just uploaded an mp3 today for one of my 'play' podcasts, that I host for free via wordpress.com/feedburner. The file ftp'd up ok and Libsyn shows it as there, but I can't access it via the URL. I even make a podcast on Libsyn using it and I couldn't access it that way either, so I don't know what gives. I guess I'll have to delete it, check the file, and try uploading it again.

Woops!

I've been forgetting to post here, though I'm still actively working on the show. I haven't been putting as much time into production for the last few shows. Hopefully my experience with the microphone is compensating for fewer takes (and sometimes just speaking off the top of my head). The last one I did was a full show, fully scripted etc. And I've done a few specials which, if not entertaining, are cathartic to me. I guess that's the reason behind the show in the first place.

Podcats: I was running out of podcast and had to use Deetes for the last episode, but I have two new ones lined up for the coming shows. Nemo from California and Bear from Conneticut. Nemo's man is a cartoonist and Bear's man is a musician/programmer with a lot of interesting stuff on his website. The kind of person I just 'hate' because they seem to be good at everything and I'm feel like I'm really good at nothing. Bear looks just like Inky, but maybe bigger.

A Day of Sadness

Seventeen years ago today, on another Saturday, my sweet daughter Christina was born. Five and a half years ago she went home to Heaven. While her time here was brief, it was joyful. I know that I wanted and tried to make her life full and rich and happy and that she was very loved. I hope that she knew how much she was loved, and how proud she made me. In my heart I hope that she knows how much she is missed. Daddy loves you, baby.

There Goes The Audience / Equipment Upgrade

Episode #3 is out. I didn't plan to get all biblical but, like Popeye said, "I yam what I yam."

I think the vocal quality will be a lot better with this show. My friend Kev' loaned me this great little Tascam interface box which connects to the laptop via USB. I could then connect my SM58 to the Tascam with an XLR cable. I borrowed a boom mic-stand from CW and I was good to go. THe down side is that I have to give the Tascam back, and it's $200. On the bright side, I think I can get a scaled down version of the same thing by M-Audio at Best Buy for half that, and not have to reach anything because I redeemed my credit card points on a $100 BB gift card.

The Reviews Are In!

This actually after my very first episode:

Ok, not a review, but I got some feedback from a trusted source and it was favorable. (Never hurts to butter people up.) Its much too early to give a ciritique of your show…since you're still "finding yourself". But I CAN say it sound like you're off to a good start.
You're organized, you have the technology, and you have the desire to put out a good product!

That was from John Bell of "Bells In The Batfry" (johnbell.com). Thanks John!
